Free Cuba 2021- How Communism has Crippled This Beautiful Caribbean Country

Want some insight on what it's like to live in Cuba for the Cubans that are struggling for their freedom? In this video photographer Jason Lanier shares his experiences of traveling to Cuba 4 different times over the span of 2 years where he details the struggles that Cubans face related to daily supplies, freedom of speech, freedom of movement and more.

This video covers Jason's trips where he has gone down there by himself and also with two photography groups that he lead down there. It shows the true potential of this amazing Caribbean country, but also shows the struggles and poverty that exist in a country that time has left behind.

Jason's travels took him to the capital city of Havana, and into the more rural areas of this beautiful country that has struggled significantly under the yoke of the Communist Party in Cuba.

Recently the Cuban people have risen up to demand more freedoms and have called for an end to the Communist reign over their country. We hope this video helps shed some light on what the people of Cuba are going through and we thank you for watching.

Below are some of the images that Jason has taken during his travels to Cuba:

Senorita Mecanica- Shooting the Forgotten Sony Wide Angle Lens- the FE 28mm and Rotolight Neo 2 in Havana, Cuba by Jason Lanier

Cuba is always an amazing experience. I’ve been there many times by myself, with my family and with two photography groups.

On my most recent trip there in 2019 we had the opportunity to shoot in a real mechanic’s garage in Havana. It all happened while we were walking down the street on our last day there as a group. We were heading towards the Feria which is the local shopping area for some souvenir shopping when we passed a garage with a 1951 Chevy inside that they were working on.

I walked inside and asked if we could shoot there in exchange for some dinero and they were very kind to oblige. Click the video below to watch the entire shoot!

So we continued down to the Feria, bought some wardrobe and accessories for Emily and returned with gear and a sense of creativity to do a shoot!

I planned on shooting with the Sony Zeiss 35mm f/1.4, but one of my workshop attendees named Sandy offered up her Sony FE 28mm f/2 lens, and I decided to give it a go!

This is a lens that I own and purchased 3 years ago. But for some reason I just never ended up using it. So when this opportunity to shoot with this lens came up I decided to go for it.

We pulled out 4 or 5 Rotolight Neo 2’s and lit this place UP! I did the shoot using the Sony A7Riii and ended up using the 28mm for the entire shoot. Below are the images taken:

A BIG thanks to Andrew Balerud for filming this shoot, Emily Holmes for helping with make up and lighting, and to my workshop attendees for joining me on this epic adventure. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate your support.

Lastly, PLEASE give a follow to Emily Rinaldo my amazing model and muse who always knocks it out of the park. You can find her at www.instagram.com/em.explores

Thanks!

Portraits of a Cuban Tobacco Farmer using the Sony FE 100mm STF and 70-200mm G Master Lenses by Jason Lanier

Recently I had the opportunity to visit Cuba for the first time.  Like many folks from the United States I was very excited to do so since it has been closed off for visiting for the last 60 years. One of the main things I wanted to do was to visit some traditional Tobacco Farms.  It isn't because I'm a smoker, because I'm not.  It's because Cuba is world famous for their Tobacco and I just had to visit the farms that create this product that is coveted the world over.

So my Assistant Brenda and I ventured into the beautiful countryside of Vinales on horseback where we found some beautiful people and locations to shoot.  I really recommend watching the video above to get a real feel for the shoot.  I also did a voice over in the video to explain everything going on and why I decided to use what lenses.

Below are the images taken during the shoot and I'm separating them by the lens used.  Both sets of images were taken with the lenses shooting wide open at 100 ISO with the Sony A7Rii.
