Can a building have a soul? Maybe it can't, but the people inside sure did. This image was taken just 2 weeks before the attacks on 911 while I was there for a family trip. We stood on top of the roof of the building and it was almost incomprehensible to imagine that 2 weeks later it all came down.
That's why photography is so incredibly powerful. It captures the moments that can never be brought back and makes them real again. Photographers are the visual historians and as the old saying goes, "A picture tells a thousand words."
May we never forget the innocent who perished and the evil that committed the atrocity. Regardless of your ideaolgical beliefs you should never target the innocent to achieve your goals. I sincerely feel for the families of those impacted by this heinous act. I hope that they are able to find solace in our care and concern for them and in knowing that their sorrows will be heaped upon those responsible for this act by God.
This image was taken shortly after 9-11 before I was a professional photographer, when I traveled to New York to take in the gravity of what happened to our nation. The lights are coming from the World Trade Center site and I was moved by the American flag flowing in front of it. I hope we truly never forget.

This image was taken at my real wedding workshop for Ryan and Janette at the Moundsville State Penitentiary. It was an amazing wedding workshop where we shot their wedding while I brought photographers who could learn and build their portfolios...at a real wedding!
During the first dance they unleashed a cloud of fog which made it beautiful. Congrats to Ryan and Janette! We are currently working on finalizing more real wedding workshops for this year and next.
Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/200 sec at f/7.1, 19mm at ISO 1000, flash fired. Taken at 7:14pm.

This image was taken at my landscape workshop in Yellowstone just last month. We put our hiking boots on and went for a walk out to this stream about 1 hour before sunset. It was such a peaceful and beautiful place...finding these types of locations is the reason I love landscape photography.

I always say that the best photographers in the world are landscape photographers. Why? Because we have to work around so many elements that are out of our control. Rain, snow, sun (or lack thereof), whether or not we are blessed with the right amount of clouds etc. And then those who decide to incorporate landscape photography into their fashion, wedding etc. have even more of an advantage.
Well, this image was taken at my Yellowstone landscape workshop in June. Shot with a slow exposure during sunrise to capture the mist and spray coming off of a geyser.
Next up! Rocky Mountain National Park in 2 weeks!!!!
Camera settings: Nikon D800, 4 sec at f/20, ISO 50, flash did not fire. Taken at 5:46am.

FYI: This image is not HDR. This is what happens when you expose for the background and use flash to light your subject. This image was taken at my workshop in Miami in May. Using my Pocket Wizards I fired my flash off camera which enabled me to set a different exposure level for my overall image. A great way to create dramatic contrast in your images!

This image was taken at my workshop in Oahu, Hawaii off the north shore by my attendee Minori Inoue. It was a beautiful sunset and she sent me this shot which I REALLY appreciated! I did a little editing magic on it, but the shot is all hers from what she took in the camera and it shows you just how much you can learn at one of my workshops....:)

This is a set of 3 images put side by side in Photoshop to show you something pretty interesting from my Supernatural shoot at the Moundsville State Penitentiary back in April 2013. I shot this with my Nikon D800 which shoots at 4 frames per second, so these 3 shots were literally shot within less than a second of each other, all at 7:20pm, at 42 seconds.
This was of the model Rachel at the penitentiary and it was a blast. You can decide what you think it is...I just noticed it immediately when I was looking through my pictures in Lightroom. The mist is to the left of the model, and the only reason the flash didn't fire on the third picture was because it hadn't recycled quickly enough to do so.
The pictures haven't been enhanced in Photoshop, just stitched together side by side for comparison purposes. Let me know what you think!

What is more American than gathering around a huge group of strangers and coming together to celebrate the independence day of our amazing nation? That's exactly what we did last night, and the fireworks show was amazing. May God continue to bless America.
Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/20 sec at f/4.0, 16mm at ISO 800, flash did not fire. Taken at 9:32pm on July 4, 2013 by Jason Lanier.

This image was taken at my family shoot for the Huang family in Westlake Village two days ago. James and Kathryn were my wedding clients from a few years back and they (as do many clients) asked me to take their family portraits. I love how the very gently swung Mia back and forth as they walked down the bridge of the Pagoda. I really do love doing family sessions!
Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/800 sec at f/5.6, 18mm at ISO 50, flash fired. Taken at 12:08pm.
